MIT’s Material Science department offers multiple extracurricular lab classes, including glassblowing and metal forging. I was lucky enough to lottery into the glassblowing class and spend a semester learning the art. The class was more than just art. They taught about the properties of glass and how to work with those to shape it in a desired fashion. I learned about glass transition temperatures, residual stresses caused by temperature gradients and variable shrinkage, and what goes into the powders to change glass color.
