Twice a year, during orientation and Campus Preview Weekend, we put on events to get freshmen excited about MIT and our dorm. We build all sorts of things, like a multistory fort and rollercoaster, and when it’s all said and done the wood goes up for free. I used some of the leftover wood to build a loft for my room. I designed it to fully span the space, such that it didn’t have posts in the middle of the room and there wasn’t a ladder taking up space. I also wanted it short enough so I could sit in bed and tall enough so I wouldn’t hit my head. And of course, I didn’t want it to break while I was asleep.
I made a CAD model to make sure I could meet my requirements more easily, and of course, to get some practice doing modeling.
